This site exists because of a simple frustration I kept coming across: so much dog training advice out there is either outdated, overly complicated, or just doesn’t actually work. Owners are told to “be the alpha,” to punish bad behaviour, or to follow generic tips that ignore what’s actually going on with their dog.

I wanted to build something different. A place where the advice is honest, the methods are backed by real science and nothing is overcomplicated for the sake of it.

Understanding Dog Behaviour exists to help dog owners get to the root of problem behaviour, not just manage the symptoms. Whether it’s barking, separation anxiety, jumping up, or a dog who simply won’t settle, we believe every behaviour has a cause and understanding that cause is the first step toward real, lasting change.

Our aim is simple: practical, honest advice that actually works, without the fluff, the outdated theory, or the unnecessary complexity.

This site is for anyone who loves their dog but is finding day-to-day life harder than it should be. Maybe you’ve got a puppy with a biting habit, a rescue dog who struggles when you leave the house, or an adult dog who’s never quite mastered recall. Maybe you’ve tried things that haven’t worked and you’re not sure what to try next.

Everything on this site is built on three principles:

Force-free: We don’t believe in punishment-based training, dominance theory, or anything that relies on fear or discomfort. Modern animal behaviour science has moved well beyond that and so have we.

Science-backed: The advice here is rooted in how dogs actually learn and think, not outdated myths or guesswork. When something works, we explain why, so you understand your dog better, not just follow instructions blindly.

Honest: We won’t oversell a quick fix that doesn’t exist. Real behaviour change takes consistency and time and we’ll always tell you that straight rather than promising overnight miracles.

On this site you’ll find articles covering everything from puppy basics to specific behaviour problems like separation anxiety, reactivity and recall training. You’ll find brain games and enrichment ideas you can try today with things you already have at home and you’ll find honest recommendations for the training resources and programmes we genuinely believe make a difference, including the free guides and tools we’ve put together ourselves.

There’s no shortage of dog training content online, but a lot of it is vague, recycled, or designed to keep you scrolling rather than actually help. We try to do the opposite: give you something you can use immediately, explained clearly, without padding it out unnecessarily.
